Research activity per year
Over the past 15 years, Dr Tanveer Hussain has built an internationally recognised research profile in computational physics, pioneering advances at the intersection of renewable energy, nanosensing, and nanobiosensing, core areas aligned with UNE’s Renewable Energy and One Health strategic priorities. His research spans advanced materials modelling, hydrogen storage, sustainable battery technologies, pollutant detection, and disease biomarker sensing, addressing urgent global challenges while contributing to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Central to his work is the application of advanced quantum mechanical simulations and computational modelling to accelerate scientific discovery. Rather than relying solely on lengthy and costly trial-and-error laboratory experimentation, his research employs state-of-the-art computational approaches to rapidly design, screen, and optimise novel nanomaterials and molecular systems. These methods enable the prediction of chemical performance and exploration of complex material behaviours at the atomic level with exceptional precision, significantly reducing development time while driving innovation across clean energy and sensing technologies.
Dr Hussain has published more than 235 peer-reviewed papers, with approximately 85% appearing in Q1 journals. His research has achieved an H-index of 57 and attracted over 9,600 citations, exceeding national and international benchmarks in the field. He has secured more than $3.0 million in competitive research funding, including a prestigious ARC Discovery Project, and leads strong interdisciplinary collaborations across Asia, Europe, and North America. Since 2022, these collaborations have generated more than 75 joint publications, HDR co-supervisions, and shared funding successes.
His research excellence directly informs curriculum innovation and research-led teaching, exemplified by his leadership in developing UNE’s Bachelor of Science Renewable Energy Systems major, aligning educational programs with national priorities and global sustainability goals. As a dedicated educator with formal qualifications in science education, Dr Hussain promotes conceptual clarity, inquiry-driven learning, and authentic real-world application, consistently delivering strong student outcomes and high teaching evaluations.
Recognised for his research excellence, international collaborations, and academic leadership, Dr Hussain continues to strengthen UNE’s global reputation through impactful science, innovation, mentorship, and the advancement of sustainable technologies for future generations.
