Value System in Islam Forming Basis of its Human Rights Concepts

The concept of Human Rights in Islam is one of the most contentious issues of Human Rights discourse in Islamic world. There is marked difference between the traditionalist and the modernist point of view concerning human rights. Most of the writings of present day scholars rests on the notion of proving that Islam gave the rights concept fourteen centuries earlier before the West raised the human rights issue at the universal level. This paper will examine the question that values relating to human rights are present within Islamic principles and teaching but their applicability in universal sense is not present in the writings of medieval and traditionalist Muslim scholar. Secondly it will examine these values which form the basis of its human rights concept and lastly it examines the views of modern scholars of Islam about human rights in Islam.
