Abstract
Measurements of heat production (HP) can be used to identify sheep or cattle that use metabolisable energy efficiently for growth. ... We compared estimates of HP derived using the open-circuit respiration chamber, SF6 tracer and the heavy water (D2O) dilution techniques. A range of HP rates was established by using sheep that differed in live weight and feed intake. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of the SF6 tracer method for measuring energy expenditure in large groups of grazing ruminants.
