Abstract

The research contribution - The project takes the 16th century Italian form of the keyboard 'canzona' and gives it a modern twist by scoring for toy piano and recorder. Building on the increasing presence of the toy piano in art music circles, the project takes instruments commonly associated with children and uses them in new and novel ways. The 'canzona' was the precursor to the classical fugue and trio sonata. The style is marked by lively and rhythmic material which will suit the percussive toy piano.
