Abstract

Theodora (ca. 497-548 CE), wife of Justinian, was, according to Procopius' 'Secret History', the daughter of a bear keeper employed by the Green hippodrome faction in Constantinople (SH 9.33). 9.33). After a career as a "mime" or actress in the capital, she married Justinian in 525; the law passed by Justin I to allow his nephew to marry an actress also secured the status of Theodora's illegitimate daughter (CJ 5.4.23). Procopius' account that she also had an illegitimate son is not substantiated, however (SH 17.16-23). Crowned with Justinian on 1 April 527, Theodora was a devout Miaphysite, protecting and housing clergy and monks in the capital, and was responsible for the conversion of Nubia to the Miaphysite faith, ca. 540.
