Abstract
The people of Minang (located in the west of the island of Java) are enterprising and independent, passing far from home and being well received elsewhere as successful ('tricky') and liked. This success against the odds is likened to the tale of the baby buffalo which vanquished its rival in a set contest by being a creative strategist.
