Abstract

This study investigated some of the major issues affecting the resettlement process and lives of both voluntary and involuntary African migrants in Western Australia. There are increasing numbers of African migrants resettling in Western Australia. Reasons for migration include life opportunities, economic perspectives, armed conflict, persecution, and genocide. Migrating to other countries may be positive for African migrants but the stressors associated with the resettlement process can be significant and may have a profound impact upon their mental health. These stressors are related to numerous factors including assimilation, acculturation, language barriers and discrimination.
