Abstract
FOR AT LEAST three thousand years mercenarism has been a feature, oftenthe major feature, of the institutions of organised violence. Even todaymercenarism is still a part of warfare as the experiences of Angola, Lebanon, theSeychelles, Sierra Leone and Papua New Guinea among other places shouldindicate. But there is a difference between most of this history and the last fewhundred years.
