Abstract

The right of navigation and the right of establishment of offshore installations will clash in some areas of the sea, in particular, those areas closer to the shore. Offshore installations in shipping lanes may lead to loss of time and the risk of accident and collision. In 1975, in the Gulf of Mexico, the collision of a British super tanker with an unmanned drilling rig caused the spillage of 54,000 tones of oil into the sea. In the same area, 55 ships collided with oil rigs in the period from 1980-84.
