Abstract
By the end of this chapter you will be able to:
. identify the concept of law and its purpose;
. explain the federal constitutional system in Australia;
. explain when federal or State/Territory parliaments have the power to make laws;
. define what is meant by "law", "common law" and "legislation";
. identify the main approaches to statutory interpretation;
. identify the courts in the Australian legal system and describe their heirachy;
. explain the doctrine of precedent and how it operates in the court system;
. classify areas of law and legal proceedings; and
. explain the court process and alternative ways of resolving disputes.
