The Albert Joseph Memorial Orations: A Fiftieth Anniversary Tribute to the Mind and Soul of New England

Albert Joseph was born at Gympie on 9 November 1873, in modest circumstances, and at his death was the Tamworth manager of the Northern Associated Dailies - a powerful newspaper group encompassing the 'Northern Daily Leader' (Tamworth), 'Northern Star' (Lismore), 'Maitland Mercury' (West Maitland), 'Daily Examiner' (Grafton) and 'Tweed Daily' (Murwillumbah). He died on 15 November 1947. He had been appointed a member of the Advisory Council of the New England University College on 25 November 1938, on which body he served until his death. At its next meeting, in December 1947 that Council had accepted the motion, moved by T. Forster and seconded by Mr Roy Blake (of the Armidale Newspaper Company): "That the Advisory Council ... places on record its profound appreciation of the valuable work done by the late Albert Joseph, Esquire as a member of the Advisory Council. The late Mr Joseph was a man whose interest in Education in all its phases did much to further the welfare of children, adolescents and young men and women in the north of New South Wales and ... regards his death as a severe loss not only to the University [the Council] but to the cause of education generally."
