Abstract
Self-reflection and self-assessment have been identified as requirements for psychologists in the new competencies, coming into effect in December 2025. Whilst psychologists are generally familiar with the terms “self-reflection” and “self-assessment”, there is limited guidance within the broader literature as to how these terms are defined and distinguished and how psychologists can overcome challenges to most effectively engage in self-reflection and self-assessment. This commentary provides practical strategies for clinicians to increase effective engagement in self-reflection and self-assessment, including how to foster metareflection, enhance self-assessment and measure self-reflection. Together, these recommendations form a practical framework for psychologists to apply self-reflection across all other competencies for continued growth and development.
