Saumarez

Saumarez Homestead, situated on Armidale's doorstep and along the airport flight path, is a key heritage property of the National Trust of Australia (NSW). The complex consists of three elements: a two-storeyed Edwardian house, extensive gardens and a largely intact farmyard with sixteen buildings. It occupies ten hectares (25 acres), excised from a remnant pastoral property of 3,272 hectares (8,087 acres) in 1984. An amendment to the Australian Taxation Act (1936) was necessary before legal transfer by way of an absolute gift from F.J. White (Saumarez) Pty Limited was effected on 12 June 1986. The cultural significance of 'Saumarez' Homestead lies in the history, the continuity and diversity of the place, and its role in the settlement of New England, the evolution of Armidale and Uralla and the development of a rural industry, especially sheep.
