Abstract
Few science teachers in Fiji organised whole class experiments far students despite students' practical work being promoted by the Ministry of Education as being an essential component of science education. This paper reports findings from a series of interviews with science teachers conducted to investigate one of the causative factors; i.e.: the deterioration of science apparatus and facilities. It was found that previous initiatives to address the problem of laboratory maintenance were not sustained. It is argued here that more robust processes need to be put in place. In this case it appears that the most efficient and cost effective means of supporting practical work is for the Fiji Ministry of Education to employ laboratory assistants to service cohorts of schools.
