Review of Neil Wigglesworth, 'The Story of Sport in England', Routledge, London, 2007, pp. vii + 196, pb.

The history and development of sport in England has been researched, analysed and written about for a number of years. Indeed Neir Wigglesworth himself has been a significant contributor to this genre, with his earlier 1996 text 'The Evolution of English Sport', being one specific example. His latest contribution 'The Story of Sport in England' essentially covers the same themes and issues as his aforementioned earlier edition, with predominately the same chapter titles... The similarities in structure and content between the two editions is not intended as a criticism of 'The Story of Sport in England', nor does it detract from the prime purpose of the text, because as is explained in both the introductory chapter and on the back cover, the book has been written to provide an accessible but comprehensive introduction to the history of sport in England for A-Level and undergraduate students. It achieves this aim admirably with clarity and purpose.
