Abstract

This critical edition is a paperback reprint of Hélène Baby's work published in 2001, the first edition of Abbé d'Aubignac's 'La Pratique du théâtre' since that of Pierre Martino (1927). The work contains an introduction, the variations of the first edition of 1657, more than 1,000 notes and a critical analysis entitled 'Observations on La Pratique du théâtre'. Three essays by d'Aubignac that followed 'La Pratique' in the original edition are presented in the appendix. Baby's edition is a magnificent work that is indispensable to all scholars of seventeenth-century French drama. The author succeeds not only in shedding light on 'La Pratique du théâtre', but also in clarifying the subtleties and the contradictions of d'Aubignac's system of dramatic art.
