QuickSmart Numeracy Example Student Folder

The aim of QuickSmart Numeracy is to help students to become faster and more automatic in the recall of the basic number facts for the four operations, so that they can apply this knowledge in solving mathematical problems and thus participate more successfully in their mathematics lessons in their classrooms. Using effortful and error prone strategies such as finger counting to do calculations uses up valuable working memory which lessens the amount of time available to solve more complex mathematical problems. In QuickSmart Numeracy lessons, each session focuses on a particular set of Focus Facts. Activities that concentrate on the speed and accuracy of recall of these facts combined with the accompanying mathematical understanding, result in the development of the automatic recall of these facts. Learning also focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of relevant mathematical language and strategies to be utilised in solving mathematical problems. This folder will be an accumulative record of the: Number Focus Fact sets targeted across the mathematical operations; completed Speed Sheets for each Focus Fact set; Numeracy Strategies that have been learnt and consolidated; Problem Solving 6S Strategy scaffold; completed problem solving exercises; completed Independent Practice worksheets; and graphs demonstrating results in: Number of Flash Card number facts correct in 1 minute, CAAS computer assessment tasks.
