Quicksmart: Improving literacy for students with learning difficulties

Abstract

Students with learning difficulties generally exhibit consistent weaknesses in basic literacy skills that are challenging to address within the context of the regular classroom. This paper outlines an innovative theory-based research initiative, QuickSmart, which incorporates the Computer-Assisted Assessment System (CAAS), and is focused on improving fluency and comprehension for students with learning difficulties. QuickSmart is designed specifically to meet the needs of middle school students with learning difficulties, that is, students whose poor facility with texts may prevent them from accessing the curriculum and meaningfully participating in many learning experiences.
