Abstract

The film script for Our Absent Grandchildren was re-configured from a stage script. The innovative filming style drew upon a rich history of ethnotheatre, filming and performative practices. The empathy and understanding enabled by this style of film are important precursors to reflecting on and potentially changing current practice. The film poses new questions in regard to both (i) the type of support and services provided for grandparents, and (ii) how film and ethnotheatre can be used to engage social and legal service professionals in rethinking and reimagining their interactions with, and handling of the issues faced by, grandparents who are denied relationships with their grandchildren.
