    Abstract

    Professor H.W. Piper, the foundation professor of English in the Universities of New England and of Macquarie, died in Sydney on 29th March 1990 at the age of 74. He had received his B.A. from the University of Adelaide in 1938 and served in the A.I.F. throughout World War II. After a meteoric career at Adelaide he was invited in 1954 to accept the chair of English at the newly autonomous University of New England.
