New England Lives II

This collection of essays is the second volume produced as the result of a most fruitful collaborative project between the University of New England and the Armidale and District Historical Society. The general purpose, inaugurated and funded by the University, was to further its cultural dialogue with the community in the anniversary year 1998, a time seventy years since the founding of the Armidale Teachers' College and sixty years since the commencement of classes at the New England University College, itself an outreach of the University of Sydney. While the interwoven education theme of New England Lives (1998) - as the initial volume was styled - focussed on the founding of The Armidale School in particular, in the essay on Archdeacon John Ross, and on the adult education outreach of the University in the work of A.C.M. Howard and of W.J.P. McCarthy, this volume now considers pioneer pre-schooling provision, the wide ranging vision for education and actual achievement of D.H. Drummond, and two distinctive educational careers in Armidale, that of Dulce Lindsay in the preparation of women primary school teachers and of Alan Cash in his two decades of encouraging revolutionary change at The Armidale School.
