Abstract

We study maximal families π’œ of subsets of [𝑛]={1,2, . . . , 𝑛} such that π’œ contains only pairs and triples and 𝐴⊈𝐡 for all {𝐴,𝐡}βŠ†π’œ, i.e. π’œ is an antichain. For any 𝑛, all such families π’œ of minimum size are determined. This is equivalent to finding all graphs 𝐺=(𝑉,𝐸) with |𝑉|=𝑛 and with the property that every edge is contained in some triangle and such that|𝐸|βˆ’|𝑇| is maximum, where 𝑇 denotes the set of triangles in 𝐺. The largest possible value of |𝐸|βˆ’|𝑇| turns out to be equal to ⌊(𝑛+1)Β²/8βŒ‹. Furthermore, if all pairs and triples have weights 𝑀₂ and 𝑀₃, respectively, the problem of minimizing the total weight 𝑀(π’œ) of π’œ is considered. We show that min 𝑀(π’œ)=(2𝑀₂+𝑀₃)𝑛²/8+π‘œ(𝑛²) for 3/𝑛≀𝑀₃/𝑀₂=:Ξ»=Ξ»(𝑛)<2. For Ξ»β‰₯2 our problem is equivalent to the (6,3)-problem of Ruzsa and SzemerΓ©di, and by a result of theirs it follows that min 𝑀(π’œ)= 𝑀₂𝑛²/2+π‘œ(𝑛²).
