Abstract
Prodigious intellectual abilities are frequently revealed in mathematics, with mathematically gifted children demonstrating significant above-age competencies and insights. These two aspects - analytic skill and creativity, are both demonstrated by young mathematical brains, as evidenced by case studies such as are briefly described here by way of introduction; In the main part of this article I review some neuroscientific studies of mathematical cognition and general intelligence that seem relevant to understanding how mathematically gifted students think, and lead to some in-principle suggestions for curriculum.
