Abstract
Magendie was the elder son of Antoine Magendie, a Bordeaux surgeon originally from the Pyrenees region of France, and Marie Nicole de Perey de Launay, a native of Paris. Notwithstanding the aristocratic flavor of Mme Magendie's maiden name, Antoine Magendie was a follower of the egalitarian social philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78), in honor of whom the couple's second son was named Jean-Jacques. There were no other children, and in May 1792, after a prolonged illness, Mme Magendie died in Paris, where the family had relocated during the previous year.
