Abstract
Lignin is a promising feedstock for generation of renewable substitutes for fossil fuel-derived liquid fuels and chemical feed stocks, and the only convenient renewable source of aromatic compounds. This review outlines the products obtainable directly through lignocellulosic biomass fractionation and through depolymerisation/valorisation of lignin. Current and potential value-added applications of these products as substitutes in applications currently dominated by products derived from fossil fuels are discussed.
