Abstract
The article presents a detailed comparison of Abbé d'Aubignac's tragedy La Cyminde ou les deux victimes (1642) and La Calprenède's tragi-comedy Le Clarionte, ou le sacrifice sanglant (1637), with a view to determining the extent to which the former work is indebted to the latter. Striking similarities are identified in the internal structure of the plays (subject matter, characters and denouement), as well as in the external structure (use of narrations and monologues). The article concludes that while there are sufficient differences between the works to acquit d'Aubignac of a charge of plagiarism, it is probable that the dramatist was influenced by Le Clarionte in the creation of his Cyminde.
