Abstract

In these days of fashionably long biographies it is refreshing to read this sharp and concise life of Kylie Tennant. Jane Grant's penetrating account is a pleasure to read. With her direct style and her intriguing analysis of Tennant's personality, Grant solves many of the problems of literary biography without even blinking. The clarity of Grant's portrait of Tennant as novelist, critic, daughter, wife, and mother is unwavering. She outlines her interpretive stance early and confidently articulates her evidence for it with agility over just 130 pages. The approach is ingenious and reassuring. There are no fragmented selves in this biography and nothing 'provisional' about the character of Kathleen 'Kylie' Tennant.
