Abstract

The followers of an itinerant Jewish rabbi about 2,000 years ago declared they were prepared to follow their master wherever he decided to go. The rabbi remarked that no one who put their hand to the plough and looked back was fit for the kingdom of God (Luke 9:57-62). Six hundred years ago, another disciple of this same rabbi finished his life just outside the city walls of Constance. One might argue that he placed a firm hand on the plough and did not look back. What do we learn from him? All the attention this year might suggest he has been revived.
