Abstract
The part of a play where the fate of the characters is revealed – referred to as "dénouement" or "catastrophe" by French seventeenth-century theorists – occupies an important place in the Poétique (1639) by Hippolyte-Jules Pilet de La Mesnardière. At the center of this Aristotelian preoccupation with the effect of tragedy is the notion of punishment, an essential element of the tragic play. The purpose of the article is to study the requirement of punishment in the dramatic system of La Mesnardière and the techniques used by the author to apply his theories in his only play, Alinde, published in 1643.
