Hellenodikai (Ἑλληνοδίκαι, οἱ)

Abstract

There were Hellenodikai ("Judges of the Hellenes"; also transliterated Hellanodikai) for the Olympian FESTIVAL (see below), the Nemean festival (IG IV.587: ten as at OLYMPIA, probably in imitation of it, in the mid-fourth century bce), and the Asclepieia festival at EPIDAURUS (IG IV² 1.66, 1.98; see SEG 61-230), who acted as referees and umpires for the athletic contests.
