Abstract

The Gwydir wetlands support several threatened, floristically and functionally diverse wetland vegetation communities that rely on regular inundation. These communities constitute either amphibious non-woody communities or flood-dependent shrublands and woodlands (Bowen and Simpson 2010). Dominant amphibious wetland vegetation communities include water couch marsh grasslands dominated by water couch (Paspalum distichum), spike rush (Eleocharis spp.) and tussock rush (Juncus aridicola), typha tall rushlands dominated by cumbungi (Typha domingensis), and marsh club-rush tall sedgelands (Bolboschoenus fluviatilis).
