Abstract

About fifty years ago the third King of Bhutan decreed that Dzongkha and English would be the official languages. Since then, Dzongkha and English have been the languages of instruction in the secular school system. Teachers in Bhutan need to know both languages. However, some come to their pre-service teacher education at the Samtse College of Education (SCoE) with only a basic knowledge of English. This paper recounts an action research study that centred on ten Samtse College teacher trainees' grammatical competence, as indicated in their college essays. Action research is new to Bhutan (Maxwell, 2003), where research in the social sciences has been stimulated by the inauguration of the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) in 2004.
