Genetic relationships of growth and lean meat with meat quality and reproduction traits in Australian pigs

Abstract

Genetic relationships of growth rate and leanness with meat quality traits and reproductive traits of the sow were estimated for Large White and Landrace pigs. Heritability estimates were 0.27 for growth rate and 0.45 for lean meat percentage. Meat quality traits had low to moderate heritabilities (0.14 to 0.35). Growth rate had no or a slightly favourable genetic relationship with meat quality traits, while selection for increased lean meat percentage will increase the incidence of PSE and reduce intramuscular fat content. Litter size and growth rate were unfavourably correlated (rg: -0.31 to -0.07). Lean meat percentage was genetically not related with litter size. Average piglet weight at birth was favourably correlated with both production traits (rg: 0.08 to 0.42).
