Abstract

The Closing the Gap in NSW Independent Schools Project (2011-2012) was conceptualised and conducted by the NSW Association of Independent Schools (NSWAIS). This Project focused on improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attending four independent NSW schools. Specifically, it aimed to increase the literacy skills of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, develop these students' positive attitudes to learning, and encourage home and school engagement. The Project also sought to strengthen the capabilities and leadership competencies of school staff members by providing professional development in the strategic use of data and the development of whole school approaches to literacy learning.
