Filipino women judges and their role in advancing judicial independence in the Philippines

The advancement of women in the legal profession is testament to how far gender equality has broken barriers for women in the Philippines. Filipino women have attained considerable progress in social, economic and political fields. Since 2006, the Global Gender Gap Report has consistently placed the Philippines among the top countries in the world with the highest gender parity – and the highest in Asia (World Economic Forum 2020). This gender report measures gender-based gaps in access to resources and opportunities, demonstrating improvement in reducing disparities between men and women. With greater opportunities and rights, Filipino women have become active participants in building democratic institutions and the administration of justice in the country.
