Abstract

Chapter 14 focuses on the practical aspects of feeding. The primary consideration when supplementing sheep either at pasture, in containment areas or in feedlots is the cost-efficiency of any feeding decision. As there are many supplement options, from forage crops to grain screenings and by-products, it is impossible to generalise about which feeding strategy is most cost-effective, except on a case by case basis. Animal welfare should also be considered to fully account for the potential cost of a decision not to supplement.
