Abstract

In 2006, after extensive community consultations, Salisbury Communities for Children (SCfC) formed a representative group to develop a Family Centre and other activities in Ingle Farm. An initial task of the group (which consisted of representatives from non-government organisations, government organisations, staff, and community members) was to hold a focus group to determine an agreed list of priority principles. These were:

• Inclusion: respecting cultures and differences; acceptance of differences (families); cultural diversity in parenting practices

• Fun

• Universal: welcoming and supportive environment; appreciating and accepting parents

• Encouraging parent child attachment

• Balance between universal and targeted programs; assisting the families who were the most disadvantaged to access

• Collaboration; networking with other groups/linking

• Empowering parents to develop community; families experiencing community & contributing to communities.
