El futuro del patrimonio histórico: ¿Por qué debemos ocuparnos de la herencia cultural?

En este artículo abordo dos temas íntimamente interrelacionados, concernientes a la herencia cultural: 1) ¿Cómo podemos aprovechar los valores que inferimos del patrimonio cultural para determinar los del futuro? y, 2) Qué debemos hacer para asegurar que estos valores provenientes del pasado tengan valor para el futuro? Preguntas que suelo plantear al iniciar conferencias públicas en Australia. Es mi costumbre ofrecer un reconocimiento a los primeros habitantes de ese país, y a la vez hacer hincapié en el hecho de que el pasado de ellos, su historia, es su patrimonio cultural y que, por tanto, el país también es suyo. No estoy familiarizado con la política que rodea a los primeros habitantes de las diferentes regiones de México, pero me imagino que existen situaciones parecidas. Por esta razón quiero expresar mi recono cimiento a los primeros habitantes de esta nación.

I am going to address two closely related themes about Heritage. 1) How can we usethe values we derive from Heritage to determine the values of the future? 2) What do we need to do to ensure that these values from the past have a value for the future? One of the things that follows from this questioning is a custom I have when I begin a public presentation in my country of acknowledging the first inhabitants of the country. In this way, we recognise that their past is their cultural heritage and thus that the country is theirs. I do not know the politics that surround the first inhabitants of different parts of Mexico, but I imagine that there are similar situations. For this reason, I now acknowledge the first inhabitants of this country. In this paper, I am going to set out a series of contrasts that occur in thinking about Heritage, and describe some results of a project to rescue aspects of cultural heritage which illustrate these contrasts. I will conclude that the priority if we want to protect and present heritage values to people is the stories we tell about the past, the histories and their interpretations.
