Abstract

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. describe the social model of disability and its link to the standards for disability services, including upholding the human rights of, and enabling self-determination for, people with disabilities
  2. define the terms rehabilitation and habilitation in relation to supporting people with disabilities to live independent lives
  3. outline how to involve families and/or carers in the rehabilitation or habilitation of people with disabilities
  4. consider how best to communicate therapeutically with people who have disabilities and are seeking health and social services.
