Abstract
This chapter describes the importance the practicum in initial teacher education (ITE) programs and how it is assessed. In particular, it focuses on developing genuine partnerships between schools and ITE institutions and the development of student teachers' reflective skills. It is written in the context of the authors' own experiences of initial teacher education at the University of Waikato in New Zealand and the University of New England in Australia.
