Abstract
Health care is continually evolving, and so nursing knowledge is not static. In a dynamic and evolving healthcare landscape, nurses must continually update their knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide safe, effective, and people-centred care. Continuing professional development and lifelong learning are essential components in all fields of nursing practice, including mental health nursing. Lifelong learning is not limited to formal education, and mental health nurses continue to learn through engaging in clinical practice. More formal continuing learning encompasses a wide range of activities, including mentoring, clinical supervision, reflective practice, in-service education, short courses, research engagement, and participation in professional networks. However, postgraduate nursing qualifications are also essential for advancing the skills, expertise and capabilities of nurses, supporting development in both professional practice and leadership roles (Cardwell et al., Citation2024; Cleary et al., Citation2024).
