Abstract

Since the arrival of European settlers in Australia and New Zealand, alcohol has consistently been both an essential and a problematic substance. Despite a long-standing reputation and national self-image, as drunken beer-loving societies, Australia and New Zealand have rarely consumed more alcohol per head of population than other English-speaking nations but alcohol has played a crucial role, both symbolic and instrumental, in the history of both societies.
