    Abstract

China and New Zealand are in high hopes for the Bilateral Free Trade Agreement, which was signed in April, 2008 and marked the first free trade agreement between China and western developed countries. While education cooperation is an integral and highlighted part of the bilateral relations between China and New Zealand, existing literature investigating the impact of the free trade agreement on the education cooperation between the two countries is scarce. By analysing public government documents and news reports since 2008 and literature review, this paper will explore the achievements, opportunities and challenges of the bilateral education cooperation, and provide relevant policy-oriented suggestions. The paper concludes that China-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement has significantly facilitated the development of bilateral education cooperation and that outstanding achievements have been obtained. However, potential challenges also exist and should not be neglected. Therefore, close and active collaboration between the two governments and relevant sectors is needed to guarantee continuing and rapid development of bilateral cooperation.
