Abstract

This book (24 pages) is for children aged 7-12 years who have a sibling with autism. The aim of this publication is to help children understand better the special features of their autistic siblings and aid their conversations with their parents or their older siblings on this topic. The text has a question and answer format based on the qualitative data collected from parents (n=360) who took part in a state-funded program for the empowerment and support of parents of persons with autism in Greece. The information contained in this resource covers general information about autism and the specific difficulties of these children in social interaction, communication and play. In addition, responses to questions about stereotypes and obsessions are provided. There is also a small section with representative children's responses drawn from the research study. At the end of the book, there is a questionnaire to be completed by young readers which can form the basis for a discussion with their parents.
