Abstract



This chapter falls in the area of instructional methodologies for the education of students in the autistic spectrum. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the convergences and divergences between Structured Teaching and Applied Behavior Analysis, both considered as well established evidence-based educational approaches for students with autism. The discussion evolves around specific theoretical axes, such as the conceptual background, the perception of autism, the instructional methodology, the ultimate educational goal of each approach, the role of parents as well as the effectiveness of each approach. The main argument is although these approaches share some common teaching strategies, yet significant divergences are identified between the two approaches in regards to the interpretation of autism, the instructional design and the goal of education for persons with autism.
