Project Details
Description
This qualitative study investigates the transition experiences of neurodivergent early career nurses in Australia and the organisational support they receive. With 15-20% of the population being neurodivergent and nursing facing critical workforce shortages (30% first-year attrition), understanding how to support this overlooked cohort is essential for workforce sustainability.
The two-phase design comprises: (1) online qualitative surveys with neurodivergent early career nurses (n=20-25) exploring their transition experiences, challenges, and support needs; and (2) semi-structured interviews with nursing managers and educators (n=8-10) examining organisational perspectives on supporting neurodivergent nurses.
Data will be analysed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify alignment and gaps between nurse experiences and organisational support provision. The project will develop evidence-based recommendations for creating neuro-inclusive workplace strategies to improve retention, particularly crucial for rural and remote settings where workforce challenges are most acute.
This research addresses a significant gap—limited Australian studies have examined neurodivergent nurses to date. Outcomes will provide healthcare organisations with practical guidance for developing inclusive retention strategies that recognise neurodivergence as a workplace strength, ultimately contributing to nursing workforce sustainability.
