Project Details
Description
UNE’s Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit is to undertake a review of the Client’s breeding program. The program faces unique challenges, being a closed herd of relatively small size (joining ~ 2500 females / year) and facing significant issues around maintaining genetic diversity, managing inbreeding and achieving genetic progress for economically important traits. The work undertaken for this consultancy will apply already existing AGBU and publicly available IP to describe genetic diversity, inbreeding and relatedness within the herd; genetic progress for published, and publically available BREEDPLAN traits and $Indexes, recording levels and data quality. On the basis of this, recommendations will be made, which may form the basis for an ongoing consultancy.
The extended term for this work is included to accommodate variations for further research arising from the initial breeding program review.
