Project Details
Description
This project covered the initial preparatory activities for the IndoBeef program, which comprised two complementary projects, CropCow and PalmCow, aimed at improving Indonesia’s community-based beef sector and the livelihoods of rural smallholder households. CropCow focused on improving cattle productivity, market-chain competitiveness and smallholder livelihoods in mixed crop–cattle systems, including developing higher-value beef supply chains, strengthening adoption and scaling of proven production practices, and incorporating socioeconomic and gender considerations. PalmCow focused on integrating cattle with oil-palm production by identifying constraints and opportunities, developing strategies for effective integration, evaluating viable business models, and identifying approaches to scale successful systems. Together, the projects sought to increase the productivity and profitability of smallholder beef production, strengthen value chains and market opportunities, and generate sustainable livelihood benefits for rural communities in Indonesia.
