Sue Saltmarsh

Professor Sue Saltmarsh is the Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences and Education at UNE. She is an interdisciplinary researcher with a background in sociological and cultural studies of education, childhood studies and children’s literature. Throughout her career, she has taken a keen interest in the intersections between social problems such as violence and inequality, and the organisational cultures of institutions such as schools and universities.  She has conducted research across a range of educational and organisational settings, developing expertise in qualitative methodologies including ethnography, social semiotics and discourse analysis. Her research is informed by theories of everyday life, violence and cultural practices, notably in the work of Michel de Certeau. Most recently her work has focused on relationships between parents and schools during periods of family crisis, considering how family violence impacts on children's schooling experience, and on the relationships between schools and parents. Her recent ARC Discovery project focused on the everyday lives and learning of children growing up in global cities of the Asia Pacific, and the ways that local, national and global contexts are implicated in social constructions of childhood and children's lived experience. She has served on a number of national and international research committees, as well as on Human Research Ethics Committees in the university and health sectors.
