Research activity per year
Peter Fletcher’s is a teacher with academic research interests centre on exploring the interplay between pedagogies that promote student-centred, personalised learning grounded in local communities and contexts. A particular focus of his work is engaging all students in STEM and digital literacy, empowering them to make informed decisions in their lives and participate meaningfully in debates that affect their communities and the wider world.
Ask Peter about his passions and he will quickly mention physics and astronomy - subjects he often uses as a springboard to inspire interest in STEM. In school settings, he actively facilitates effective STEM education and the meaningful integration of technology across the curriculum. For Peter, few things are more rewarding than seeing students engaged in authentic learning that connects science, technology, engineering and mathematics while contributing to projects that support their local communities.
Peter is therefore a strong advocate for place-based STEM learning and teaching across primary and secondary school settings. He has been involved with the NSW Department of Education’s STEM Action Schools and has served as a mentor for its New England Online Gifted and Talented program (eGATS). He has also supported workshops in STEM and astronomy education through the Department’s Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre.
Peter takes every opportunity to encourage teachers to explore pedagogies that give students increasing agency and autonomy over their learning. He believes that when learning is relevant and engaging, students can develop self-regulation and perseverance, creating an environment that fosters deeper learning.
Peter is a qualified K-6 primary generalist teacher and 7-12 secondary teacher, specialising in mathematics, science, physics, chemistry, and TAS - including technology and computing studies. His school-based experience includes positions at Hastings Secondary College’s Westport Campus, Melville High School, St Columba Anglican School, Wauchope High School and Riverside Girls High School.
In the tertiary sector, Peter has worked as a Lecturer in Science Education, STEM Education, ICT Education and Physics at the University of New England; a Tutor at the University of Sydney; a Lecturer in Physics at the University of Southern Queensland; and a Research Associate in Physics Education at Kansas State University.
Peter also brings 16 years of professional experience in industry. His roles have included Managing Director of Pure Logic Pty Ltd; Manager, Information Technology Services, at South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE; Information Technology Services Manager, Operations, at North Coast Institute of TAFE; and Manager, Networks, Communications and Desktop, at North Coast Institute of TAFE.
